10. Ten. Dieci. X.
|
Rome: It’s beautiful and it’s not. Kinda like everything else in life.
“La prossima fermata è Roma Termini.”
I moved to Italy to live at the end of September last year. I lived in Brescia (a medium-sized city in Northern Italy) until March 1, when I moved to Siena.
(I am once again back in Brescia, but that’s a story I’m going to save for another day.)
I picked up some vocabulary during those first five months in Italy, but it wasn’t until I started attending an Italian class for immigrants in Siena that I really started learning the language.
Now, finally!, I understand much of what is being said either to me or around me. The language no longer sounds foreign or like pretty sounds flowing forth from people’s mouths. Although I’m more motivated to learn the language–because it finally seems like an achievable goal to converse fluently–the glossy veneer of the nonsensical musical sounds has dulled. I don’t know, there’s something about understanding when somebody complains about the weather (or conversely, the ease in which I can complain about it) that makes any language sound less romantic.
Shiny glossy veneers are so overrated. Don’t you think? I mean, a veneer is just a thin expensive sheet of wood (or metal) with layers upon layers of unusually toxic clear varnish. If it wasn’t for the common cheap material beneath (like pine or regular mild steel), the veneer would have nothing to attach itself to.
And I’ve always preferred the look of a dull, used or aged finish anyway…and now that I’ve exhausted my analogy I’m finished with this post.
But one more thing before I go to bed on this hot summer night: it is nice to know that you can simply listen to the conductor to know when your next stop is and not have the nervous wondering of whether you’ve missed it or have yet to arrive.

MY DREAM AND VISION
|
Natural Touch is a Non Governmental Organisation based in Calabar the Eastern part of Nigeria.The inspiration come from a point of observation of handicapped people and Children roaming the streets of some citites in Nigeria mostly in Calabar begging for alms.
Most of them at the end of the day retired to uncompleted buildings to pass the night,It was a very gory site when a reported case of ritual dehumanising killing of two of such people in a street close to my residence.These two were killed and some part of them remove for rituals activities or some other things not quite known to us.
So touched by such inhuman treament to people because of their inability to defend themselves or provide proper accomodation for themselves,and even a source of livelihood was traumatic,hence,my decision to get the NGO (NATURAL TOUCH) started,with the aim to provide food and shelter for the hanicapped.Make sure there is a future for them and security of life for them.
Upon our inception,we had limited our intention to mostly the young ones and average aged.Although we could not provide accomodation for them but we provide the basic needs which is food for them atleast once a day.
It is our aim to increase the feeding arrangement to twice a day and also build a home for them.It is our aim to accomodate at least 2000-5000 handicapped people of difiers ages in the home,and Animals too.
With support from other Organisations/Individauls that are touched just as we are.We will establish a school or a handicraft centre for them to study and become independent of their own in future.
Suffice to say here that most of them roam the street with torn cloths and look unkept,We also provide clothing where necessary and affordable to them.
Based on our inability to sustain the financial burden,we are looking forward to Groups or Individuals with similar passion as we have towards uplifting the living standard of these hadicapped and also thinking of ensuring their future.
We are planning of building a home for them in Calabar to accomodate the handicapped and also recruit personnels to take care of their cooking and tranining.
We look forward to support from passionate groups and individuals.

Internet,victime de son propre succès!

Vivre sans Internet semble inimaginable pour les millions de gens qui s'en servent tous les jours. Mais selon un des principaux experts mondiaux le grand réseau est aujourd'hui menacé, et pourrait même disparaître (du moins sous sa forme actuelle), victime de la prolifération des activités criminelles et du piratage.

Il y a vingt ans, un étudiant américain avait créé et lancé le premier virus informatique -un "ver"- qui en l'espace de 24 heures avait atteint entre 5 et 10% de tous les ordinateurs reliés à Internet. A l'époque (en 1988) il ne s'agissait que d'une soixantaine de milliers de machines au total.
Il a été suivi, depuis, par des milliers d'autres "hackers", ou pirates, qui en général se donnent pour règle de ne faire aucun mal.
Mais ces pirates "honorables" ne sont plus seuls, il s'en faut.
Et les usagers d'Internet ne se sont toujours pas entièrement adaptés pour faire face au danger que constituent les virus, le pourriel (ou "spam"), les "vers" informatiques, le "phishing" et les multiples formes de fraude en ligne.
Programmes malveillants
Pourr Jonathan Zitrrain Internet est gravement menacé
Certains de ces malfaiteurs créent des programmes qui (si les usagers ont le malheur de les télécharger, consciemment ou non) vont prendre le contrôle de leurs ordinateurs, qui deviendront des "zombies".
L'an dernier, on estimait déjà que de 100 à 150 milllions de machines (soit 25% du total des PCs connectés à Internet) étaient ainsi infectés, et "recrutés" dans des réseaux permettant à leurs "contrôleurs" de s'en servir pour des activités néfastes.
Autrefois, les programmes malfaisants étaient comme des graffitis, des actes de vandalisme aux conséquences limitées.
Aujourd'hui, le phénomène s'apparente bien plus au trafic de drogue.
C'est l'avis de Jonathan Zittrain, enseignant spécialiste de la gouvernance d'Internet à l'université d'Oxford, en Angleterre.
Il estime que le grand réseau est fragile, et gravement menacé.
Selon lui, c'est en 1998, il y a une dizaine d'années, donc, que le piratage et les activités illégales sur Internet ont vraiment pris leur essor.
Fraudes en ligne
Le but des programmes malveillants est surtout financier
Et aujourd'hui, "c'est l'équivalent du trafic de la drogue" explique Jonathan Zittrain.
"L'idée est d'infecter des machines pour s'approprier illégalement leur bande passante, et de vendre le contrôle de ces machines contaminées au plus offrant.
Ensuite, elles peuvent par exemple être dirigées en masse vers un seul site web pour le faire 'planter' ou bien on se sert de ces réseaux pour envoyer des spams, ou pour recueillir des données personnelles que ces ordinateurs renferment".
Ces données peuvent par exemple prendre la forme de numéros de cartes de
crédit:les fraudes utllisant ces données à l'insu de leurs propriétaires légitimes ont coûté 212 millions de livres l'an dernier (plus de 175 milliards de francs CFA), soit une augmentation de 15% par rapport à l'année précédente.
Le professeur Zittrain souligne qu'Internet n'est que très peu contrôlé, que n'importe qui peut écrire des logiciels, ou les partager avec d'autres, pour faire pratiquement n'importe quoi.
Pour lui, cette caractéristique, qui est à l'origine du succès du grand réseau, est aussi son principal point faible.
Et Jonathan Zittrain est formel:
Internet (sous sa forme actuelle) est menacé de disparition.
Solutions douloureuses
La fin pourrait par exemple prendre la forme d'un logiciel malveillant qui provoquerait un déraillement généralisé. Ou bien l'avenir pourrait être fait de technologies "stériles", telles que l'iPhone (voir plus bas), que personne ne peut contrôler ou modifier.

"Quand vous avez ce qu'on appelle un ordinateur personnel (PC) 'générique', qui peut éxécuter n'importe lequel code sans que le fabricant puisse y faire quoi que ce soit, c'est un grand point faible", affirme le professeur Zittrain.
En effet, des milliards de gens sont connectés à Internet, et un grand nombre d'entre eux ne se protègent pas correctement.
Résultat: ils laissent grande ouverte la porte à leurs domaines, à leur données personnelles.
Et là, met en garde Jonathan Zittrain, "les solutions risquent d'être tout aussi douloureuses que le problème lui-même".
Une de ces solutions pourrait donc prendre la forme de technologies telles que l'iPhone d'Apple.
L'expert de l'université d'Oxford souligne en effet que contrairement à Internet, l'iPhone est un réseau "propriétaire".
L'appareil est élégant, facile à utiliser, mais aucun usager ne peut écrire des programmes pour lui, ou se procurer un programme écrit par un tiers, sans l'autorisation expresse d'Apple.
Cela a, certes, l'avantage de protéger le système contre les logiciels malveillants. Mais le contrôle de la machine est détenu exclusivement par une grande entreprise multinationale.
La place laissée à la création s'en trouve donc très limitée.
Tout verrouiler?
Aujourd'hui n'importe qui peut créer un logiciel
L'autre possibilité, avertit Jonathan Zittrain, serait de décider que cette expérience d'Internet, qui a duré trente ans, a été une aventure extraordinaire, mais que l'heure est venue de tout débrancher, ou de tout rendre "imperméable".
De ne plus permettre des échanges tous azimuths.
Il souligne la croissance exponentielle du grand réseau, dûe au fait qu'il est relativement facile de créer une plateforme, et de partager ce qu'on crée avec d'autres.
Si on devait tout verrouiller, "cela éliminerait une grande partie de ce que nous tenons aujourd'hui pour acquis: un monde dans lequel la technologie peut être influencée, bouleversée, même, par n'importe qui".
Selon Jonathan Zittrain, le mieux, bien sûr, serait de trouver une solution qui ne risque pas de détruire l'ensemble du système, ou de porter atteinte à la créativité et à l'ouverture qui lui ont valu un tel succès.

Call for Research Fellowship 2008
|
Martin Chautari invites applications for 12 full-time 1 year Research Fellowships.
The nature and duration of fellowships
These fellowships are meant for those who are keen to develop their research abilities and pursue a career in social research. Selected fellows will attend a 3-month course on “diversity and pluralism” starting in January 2009 and engage in full-time research beginning in March 2009. They will have to undertake research in either Nepali or English in a theme related to ‘enhancing access of marginalized communities to higher education in Nepal’. The research will be of 10 months duration. During this period, the fellows will carry out their research under supervision of a senior researcher facilitated by Martin Chautari. The fellows will have to produce one academic article jointly with their supervisor and one single author article based on their research. They will be expected to regularly participate in and organize discussions and seminars at Martin Chautari and also make periodic presentations of their research progress.
Stipends and benefits
The selected fellows will be provided with a monthly stipend allowance of up to NRs 15,000 for 12 months. Appropriate tax will be deducted at source on this amount. They will have access to Martin Chautari Library. No other financial benefits will be provided by Martin Chautari.
Eligibility requirements
Those who have completed Masters’ level coursework or higher from universities in Nepal and can commit to full-time research should apply. Priority will be given to members from marginalized communities, and women. Those teaching in colleges are also encouraged to apply. Those who cannot commit to full time research need not apply.
Application procedures
Applications can be submitted in Nepali or English. Application documents should include a cover letter, updated CV with contact address, one page concept note of proposed research, copy of citizenship certificate and a copy of previous research or publications if any. L'histoire a depuis toujours voulu placer et a gardé la femme au second plan. Et quant à l'homme lui, il joue toujours le premier rôle. Cela a toujours été ainsi à travers le monde. De l'Europe, à l'Asie en passant par les Amériques , l'Australie pour arriver en Afrique. La femme a toujours été désignée comme celle qui doit faire les travaux domestiques, notamment l'entretien du foyer. Alors que l'homme doit tout faire pour répondre aux besoins de la famille.
Les années années sont passées,les siècles avec et la femme a toujours gardé sa deuxième place jusqu'à nos jours. Toutefois, il existe depuis le XVIIe siècle dépassé à nos jours des sociétés qui admettent désormais que la femme comme l'homme ait des responsabilités presque semblables. Ceci est devenu possible tout d'abord par l'acceptation de la jeune fille à l'école. Cette admission de la gente feminine à la vie scolaire a permis justement au genre feminin de voir le monde autrement. Et ainsi, avoir des ambitions autres que la vie au foyer qui se résumait à faire des enfants et entretenir l'époux. De plus, les plus malignes deviendront avec le temps directrices dans l'administration. Et même souvent oratrices principales lors des rencontres de grande importance. Voici désormais la femme dans le monde.
En outre, la femme dans le monde ,c'est aussi une femme au service de toute une communauté. C'est le cas au Liberia , en Philipines, et en Allemagne pour ne citer que ces exemples où la Présidence est occupée par une femme. De plus ,quand elle n'est pas présidente,elle est Ministre. C'est le cas au Gabon,et de la sécretaire d'etat,aux droits de l'homme en France pour ne citer que ces exemples.Dès lors ,on peut reconnaître aujourd'hui que la femme est véritablement engagée dans le développement communautaire quelque soit le domaine.
Cependant, malgré l'implication de la femme dans le monde , on peut admettre sans risque de se tromper qu'elle oublie, plus elle évolue ,son premier monde: sa famille. En effet, plus elle est belle ,intélligente, sans s'en rendre compte, la femme se renferme sur elle-même . Pour celle qui a déjà des enfants et un époux,elle ne sera pas toujours disponible pour eux. Et engagera une domestique pour la seconder auprès de ses enfants et de son époux. En outre, pour celle qui n'en a pas,elle sera certes désirable et désirée, mais il sera difficile pour elle de créer un véritable foyer. Car elle aura toujours du travail . Quand on sait que l'homme en général aime savoir sa compange près de lui . Surtout quand il a besoin d'elle.
Voici donc la femme d'aujourd'hui , partagée entre deux mondes . Lequel privilégier? Là réside très souvent tout le problème. De même , la femme en général quand elle est cultivée se prend des airs de supériorité et parfois même de rivalité vis-à-vis de l'homme . Elle veut s'affirmer à tout moment et en tout lieu. Là justement est son erreur. Parce que aucun homme sérieux , à mon avis, n'accepterait de se faire dominer et surtout gérer par une femme . C'est là , la dernière chose à faire quand on veut garder le statut de chef de famille. Le phénomène n'attire peut-être pas l'attention de tous, mais il est bien d'actualité. ; la "femelle moderne" aujourd'hui vit souvent seule.
C'est pourquoi on l'aperçoit souvent seule, au volant d'une grosse voiture, vivant seule dans une bonne villa avec ses enfants quand elle en a . Mais n'ayant très souvent pas de partenaire fixe. Aussi, quand le partenaire ne renonce pas par orgueil, il la quitte pour absence de douceur . Elle est certainement trop cultivée pour savoir aimer et trop bien payée pour savoir respecter . Ainsi,voici à quoi resemble la femme au bureau. Perdue entre émotion et passion ,devoir et engagement , elle n'a que pour recompense le stresse et sans peut-être le vouloir ,chasse celui qui pourrait lui apporter reconfort et sécurité.
En péroraison, il est admettable qu'une femme de nos jours qui ne fait rien dans la vie , à part faire des enfants et
préparer à manger n'est plus d'actualité. L'accès à l'école a
joué un grand rôle dans l'épanouissement de la femme . Aujourd'hui elle est presque l'égale de l'homme.Par rapport à son implication dans plusieurs activités communautaires. Toutefois, il est souhaitable que la femme hors de son bureau reste femme afin que l'homme se sente responsable et sûr de lui. Elle doit toujours être à l'écoute de ce dernier, et disponible pour sa famille au risque de la perdre voir de la briser . Que la femme demeure douce et attentive,quelque soit son rang social, au risque de finir,belle intelligente et seule.

"I wrote and recorded this around 2004 along with another song, "Jambo." Mungu Akubariki means "God bless you in Swahili". I wrote it for Ben Omondi and the orphans in Kenya. I sent him a copy and one to Enoch, a TIG member. I also sent one to "To love children," I think his name is Dave, and he loved it.
"I found the lyrics for the song. Now what is happening is that we are taking the old music track and recording new vocals on top using the lyric sheet. Barry is now putting harmonies on to my vocals and next step is mixing."

Greg says, “I found through serious meditation that there was a space within a space of hallowed peace, filled with love and wisdom. Inside this sacred place reality took on a new form. Ideas flowed like water. Problems met solutions. Worlds passed before my mind’s eye filled with saints, kindred spirits, and multi colored beings.”

‘The Way’ CG animated ink drawing by Ching Huang
A beautifully created Taoist style 3D animated drawing. Takes you from void through creation examining the changing nature of all that is. Wonderful!

Ching Huang says, “The animation reflects an ancient Taoist view of the world as a constant changing process or metamorphosis of forms rather than seemingly isolate entities. And the law of changing is rather seemingly chaotic and spontaneous and yet under an elusive deterministic order which somewhat matches the notion of fractal in Chaos theory.”
 Tao (道, Pinyin Dào ) literally translated ‘Way’ is a metaphysical concept which describes the fundamental or true nature of the universe, world and all manifest reality. The Tao both precedes and encompasses the universe, it is holistic, active and ever changing. Tao is perfectly still and continuously moving. It cannot be described because there are no adequate words. Tao is perfect Unity. Although the Tao cannot be expressed nor controlled, it can be known and embraced.
